Driving Route from Billings (Year-Round)

The reliable all-season route: I-90 West to Bozeman → US-191 South through Big Sky → US-20 West into Island Park. About 350 miles, doable in a long single day.

Billings → Bozeman

2 hrs 15 min

I-90 West through Big Timber and Livingston. Easy interstate driving — make miles. Lunch in Bozeman or Livingston.

Bozeman → Big Sky

1 hr

Exit I-90 onto US-191 South. The Gallatin Canyon begins immediately — slow down. Stop in Big Sky Town Center.

Big Sky → Island Park

1 hr 15 min

Continue south through the rest of Gallatin Canyon to West Yellowstone, then US-20 west across Henry's Lake flats to the cabin.

Tip: Leave Billings by 9 AM for an easy 4 PM cabin arrival with a Bozeman lunch. Make it later and the slow Gallatin Canyon feels longer than it should.

Scenic Alternative: The Beartooth Highway (Summer Only)

From late May through mid-October, the Beartooth Highway (US-212) is the most spectacular way into Yellowstone from Billings. It tops out at 10,947 ft, drops into the Northeast Entrance, and crosses Lamar Valley — the best wildlife viewing in the park.

When it's open

Late May (Memorial Day target) through mid-October — exact dates depend on snowpack. Check NPS road status before you commit.

How to use it

Drive Billings → Red Lodge → Beartooth Pass → Cooke City → Northeast Entrance → Lamar Valley. Exit at the West Entrance later, cabin via Island Park.

Time it takes

Plan a full day — Billings to Lamar Valley is 4 hrs without stops, and you'll want to stop a lot. Add 2.5 hrs across Yellowstone to reach the cabin.

Why Island Park is Your Basecamp

Once you've made the long Billings drive, you don't want to commute farther daily. Island Park puts you 30 minutes from the West Entrance and 90 from Grand Teton — no more long Montana legs.

30 min to Yellowstone

West Entrance is a quick US-20 drive — be at Old Faithful by 8 AM.

90 min to Grand Teton

Easy day trip to Jackson, Snake River, and Mormon Row.

Cheaper than Bozeman

Cabin pricing is a fraction of summer Bozeman or Big Sky hotels.
