Snake River Overlook in Grand Teton National Park — scenic drive from Jackson Hole Airport

Planning Your Flight to Yellowstone

One of the most common questions travelers ask is: "Which airport should I fly into for Yellowstone?" The answer depends on your budget, where you're coming from, what you want to see, and whether you're also visiting Grand Teton National Park or staying in Island Park, Idaho.

There are six airports within striking distance of Yellowstone — from a tiny seasonal strip just 2 miles from the West Entrance to a major international hub five hours south. Each has trade-offs in flight availability, rental car inventory, ticket prices, and drive scenery.

Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA)

Our top recommendation for most visitors. Idaho Falls is the closest year-round commercial airport to both Yellowstone's West Entrance and Island Park, Idaho. It's a small, easy-to-navigate terminal where you can be at baggage claim within 5 minutes of landing.

Airlines Serving Idaho Falls

Rental Cars at IDA

Hertz, Avis, Budget, National, Enterprise, and Alamo all operate from the terminal. Summer inventory sells out fast — book at least 30 days ahead. Midsize SUVs are ideal for park roads and gravel Forest Service roads near Island Park.

The Drive North

From IDA, drive north on US-20 through Rexburg and Ashton. The road climbs into the Targhee National Forest as you enter Island Park's 33-mile corridor. Stock up on groceries in Idaho Falls or Rexburg (Walmart, Costco) before heading north — options are limited once you pass Ashton.

Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)

Bozeman is the largest airport near Yellowstone and offers the most flight options. It handles millions of passengers annually, thanks to Big Sky ski resort in winter and Yellowstone visitors in summer.

Airlines Serving Bozeman

The Drive South

From Bozeman, drive south on US-191 through the stunning Gallatin Canyon — popular with rafters and kayakers. You'll pass Big Sky Resort before entering Yellowstone through the West Entrance. To reach Island Park, continue south through West Yellowstone and over Targhee Pass.

Sun over the Teton Range

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC)

Jackson Hole Airport holds a unique distinction: it's the only commercial airport inside a national park (Grand Teton). The approach over the Tetons is breathtaking. But that exclusivity comes at a cost — flights are typically 30–60% more expensive than equivalent flights to Bozeman or Idaho Falls.

Airlines Serving Jackson Hole

Getting to Yellowstone from Jackson

If your focus is Grand Teton National Park, JAC is unbeatable — you're inside the park before you leave the rental car lot. For Yellowstone, drive north through Grand Teton on US-191/89 to the South Entrance. To reach Island Park, take US-26 east through Swan Valley to Idaho Falls, then north on US-20 — about 3 hours.

West Yellowstone Airport (WYS)

The closest airport to Yellowstone — just 2 miles from the West Entrance. But there's a catch: it's tiny and seasonal.

Airlines Serving West Yellowstone

Rental Cars at WYS

This is the biggest challenge. Budget and Avis operate seasonally with extremely limited inventory — sometimes only 5–10 vehicles total. Book your rental car months in advance. There are no rideshare services in the area.

Why consider WYS? If you can secure a rental car, you land and you're at the West Entrance in under 10 minutes. The town of West Yellowstone has restaurants, gear shops, and the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. Island Park is just 30 minutes south.

Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)

SLC is the major hub airport in the region — Delta's fourth-largest hub — with 20+ airlines and nonstop flights from virtually every major U.S. city and many international destinations. If you're looking for the cheapest flight, SLC usually wins.

A massive consolidated rental car center serves all major companies. Availability is rarely an issue, and prices are the most competitive in the region.

The Drive North

Drive north on I-15 through Ogden and Pocatello to Idaho Falls (about 3.5 hours), then continue north on US-20 to Island Park (another 1.5 hours). Total: approximately 5 hours. Easy interstate driving. Consider an overnight stop in Idaho Falls to break up the journey and stock up on groceries.

Ogden-Hinckley Airport (OGD) — The Hidden Gem

Most travelers don't know about this option. Ogden-Hinckley Airport is about 35 miles north of Salt Lake City, served exclusively by Allegiant Air with budget nonstops from Phoenix/Mesa, Los Angeles, Oakland, Las Vegas, and other seasonal routes.

Flights are typically 2–3 times per week. Fares are often $50–100 cheaper than SLC. The airport is small and hassle-free. Drive to Island Park is about 4.5 hours. Downside: No rental cars at the airport — arrange pickup from nearby SLC or Ogden.

Rental Car Tips for Yellowstone Trips

A rental car is absolutely essential. There is no public transportation to the park, no Uber/Lyft in gateway towns, and the park covers 2.2 million acres with 310 miles of roads.

Book early: Summer rental cars sell out months in advance at smaller airports (IDA, WYS, JAC).

Choose the right vehicle: Midsize SUV is ideal. 4WD/AWD recommended November–April.

Compare across airports: Total trip cost (flights + car + gas) matters more than airfare alone.

Gas up frequently: No gas inside Yellowstone between West Entrance and Old Faithful. Fill up in Ashton or Island Park.

One-way rentals: Flying into Bozeman and out of Jackson (or vice versa) is popular but drop-off fees run $200–500.

Third-party sites: Autoslash, Costco Travel, and AAA often beat direct rental company rates.

Best balance of affordable flights, reasonable rental car prices, and proximity to both Yellowstone and Island Park.

✈️ Most Flights — Bozeman (BZN)

Most airlines and routes. Best rental car availability. Stunning drive through Gallatin Canyon.

🏔️ Grand Teton — Jackson Hole (JAC)

💰 Cheapest — Salt Lake City (SLC)

Lowest fares, best rental car prices, most options. Worth the 5-hour drive for budget travelers.

⚡ Fastest — West Yellowstone (WYS)

Landing to park in 10 minutes. Seasonal only. Book rental car months ahead.

🎯 Budget Nonstops — Ogden (OGD)

Allegiant nonstops at rock-bottom fares. Limited flights, no on-site rental cars.

For Island Park / Lodgepole Pines Guests

If you're staying at Lodgepole Pines Retreat in Island Park, Idaho Falls (IDA) is our strongest recommendation. It's the closest year-round airport (1 hr 45 min), and you can stock up at Costco or Walmart on the way out of town. Bozeman (BZN) is a great alternative — the drive through West Yellowstone is scenic.
