Trip Planning · From Bozeman
BZN is the most-flown Yellowstone airport for a reason — direct flights from everywhere and a stunning 2-hour US-191 drive through Big Sky and the Gallatin Canyon to your basecamp.
BZN → Island Park is 110 miles south on US-191 — slow, scenic, and worth the lunch detour at Big Sky. Each marker is a stop or fuel point.
Most-flown Yellowstone airport. Direct from DEN, SEA, MSP, ATL, ORD, JFK, LAX (seasonal). Rental car center on-site — book early in summer.
Lone Peak Tram, Town Center lunch, Bike Park — perfect halfway break.
BZN vs IDA, JAC, SLC for fares and drive times.
From BZN you can hit West (via Island Park) or North (Gardiner).
Pick up the rental at BZN, head to US-191 South through the Gallatin Canyon via Big Sky to West Yellowstone, then US-20 west into Island Park. About 110 miles, 2 hours.
US-191 south. Pretty river drive — watch for rafters and bighorn sheep on the canyon walls. Stop in Big Sky Town Center for lunch.
Continue south through the rest of Gallatin Canyon. Slow, two-lane, no service. West Yellowstone has gas + grocery.
US-20 west across Henry's Lake flats and into Island Park. You'll pass the West Entrance turn-off — that's tomorrow.
A lot of BZN visitors book a Bozeman hotel and try to commute. It doesn't work — you'll lose 4+ hours per day on the road. Island Park drops you 30 minutes from the West Entrance.
West Entrance is a quick US-20 drive — be at Old Faithful by 8 AM.
Easy day trip to Jackson, Snake River, and Mormon Row.
Cabin pricing is a fraction of Bozeman hotels and Big Sky resorts.
