Trip Planning · From Idaho Falls
Idaho Falls is the closest commercial airport and city to Yellowstone's West Entrance. Drive US-20 north for 90 minutes and you're at the cabin — Old Faithful is two hours from baggage claim.
Idaho Falls → Island Park is 80 miles of US-20 — flat farmland then a quiet climb onto the Henrys Fork plateau. Each marker is a fuel/grocery point or scenic detour.
Closest commercial airport (90 min). Daily Delta + United via SLC, DEN, MSP. Easy small-airport experience.
2 hr to Island Park. More direct flights — worth comparing.
BZN, IDA, JAC, SLC drive times and fare patterns.
From IDA, the West Entrance wins every time.
The simplest origin drive in the West: US-20 North all the way. About 80 miles, 90 minutes, no mountain passes.
US-20 North through farmland. Stop at Costco or Walmart for groceries — cheaper than Island Park.
Continue US-20 North through St. Anthony. Sand dunes detour available. Ashton is your last fuel.
Climb onto the Henrys Fork plateau. Mesa Falls byway turn-off, lodgepole forest, cabin arrival.
Idaho Falls hotels look "near Yellowstone" on a map. They aren't — a 3-hour daily commute burns half your park time. Island Park puts you 30 minutes from Old Faithful.
West Entrance is a quick US-20 drive — be at Old Faithful by 8 AM.
Easy day trip to Jackson, Snake River, and Mormon Row.
Save 2+ hours every day vs Idaho Falls. That's a whole extra geyser basin.
