Drive — Don't Fly

Boise is the rare origin city where flying is almost never the right call. Here's why:

Drive (5 hours) ✓

The clear winner. One straight shot east on US-20. No overnight stop needed, doable as a weekend trip, and you can bring all your gear, coolers, and bikes.

Fly (rarely worth it)

BOI → IDA exists but burns more time than it saves once you add airport transit, security, and rental car pickup. Door-to-door is 5+ hours either way.

Driving Route from Boise

The easiest route in the West: I-84 East → US-20 East at Bliss → straight to Island Park. About 280 miles total — no mountain passes, no overnight stop.

2 hrs

I-84 East. Stop at Shoshone Falls (the "Niagara of the West") if you've never seen it — 15 minutes off the interstate.

The Boise Weekend Yellowstone Trip

Friday

Leave Boise after work. Arrive Island Park by dinner. Settle in, sit on the deck.

Saturday

Yellowstone West Entrance day — Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Midway Geyser Basin. Hot tub at home.

Sunday

Lamar Valley wildlife loop OR fly fishing on the Henrys Fork. Pick your adventure.

Monday

Mesa Falls scenic drive, Big Springs, or a Grand Teton day trip (90 min south).

Tuesday

Slow morning, drive home to Boise. Easy 5-hour return on US-20.

Why Island Park is Your Basecamp

For Boise visitors, Island Park is the closest meaningful lodging to Yellowstone — closer than West Yellowstone hotels (which are also 2–3× the price) and a fraction of Jackson Hole.

30 min to Yellowstone

West Entrance is a quick US-20 drive — be at Old Faithful by 8 AM.

90 min to Grand Teton

Easy day trip to Jackson, Snake River, and Mormon Row.

Idaho prices

Cabin pricing is a fraction of Jackson Hole — and you sleep in actual lodgepole forest.
