Seasonal highlights and local events to help you time your Island Park and Yellowstone adventure perfectly.

January–February

Peak snowmobile season with groomed trails in top condition. Cross-country skiing at Harriman SP. Yellowstone snowcoach/snowmobile tours. Bald eagle watching along Henry's Fork. Henry's Lake ice fishing for trophy trout.

March–April

Late-season snowmobiling. Spring thaw begins. Yellowstone roads begin opening (check schedule). Baby animals start appearing — elk calves, bison calves. Henry's Fork early-season fishing as ice breaks up.

May

Yellowstone roads fully open by late May. Memorial Day weekend kicks off summer season. Wildflowers begin blooming. Fishing season opens on many waters. Bears and wolves most visible as they emerge into open meadows.

June

Summer season in full swing. Longest days of the year — daylight until 9:30 PM. Wildflowers peak. Fishing is excellent. All park facilities open. Junior Ranger programs begin. Expect crowds at Yellowstone — arrive before 9 AM.

July

Peak summer season. Fourth of July celebrations in Island Park and West Yellowstone. Warmest temps. Afternoon thunderstorms common. Firehole River swimming area open. Huckleberry picking in the forest. Perseid meteor shower preview (late July).

August

Perseid meteor shower (peak mid-August) — incredible from the cabin with dark skies. Huckleberry season continues. Smoke from regional fires possible. Yellowstone crowds begin to thin after mid-August.

September

Fall colors begin — aspens turn gold. Elk rut — listen for bugling at dusk in Yellowstone and around Island Park. Fewer crowds, cooler temps. Excellent fishing — fall run. Some facilities begin closing. One of the best months to visit!

October

Peak fall foliage in early October. Most Yellowstone facilities close mid-October. First snow possible. Incredible wildlife viewing — animals preparing for winter. Very few crowds. A magical, quiet time.

November–December

Snow arrives. Snowmobile trails begin grooming. Yellowstone winter season starts mid-December (snowcoach/snowmobile access only). Holiday season at the cabin — Thanksgiving and Christmas in a winter wonderland. Ice fishing begins.
