Fun for All Ages

Family Activities

Island Park and Yellowstone are perfect for families. From Junior Ranger programs to cabin game nights, here's how to create unforgettable memories with kids of all ages.

Junior Ranger Program

Yellowstone and Grand Teton offer free Junior Ranger programs for kids ages 4-12. Pick up a booklet at any visitor center, complete activities, and earn a badge and certificate.

Available year-round at visitor centers. Takes 2-4 hours to complete. Kids learn about wildlife, geology, and conservation.

Old Faithful & Geyser Basins

Kids love watching geysers erupt! Old Faithful is predictable and dramatic. The boardwalks are stroller-friendly, and the bright colors captivate children of all ages.

Use the NPS app for eruption predictions. Bring snacks — kids can get restless waiting. The Old Faithful Visitor Center has excellent interactive exhibits.

Cabin Games & Activities

The cabin itself is a kids' paradise! The loft has a foosball table, a retro arcade game, and life-size Connect 4. The theatre room has a projector for movie nights.

Board games available in the cabin. The large yard is perfect for outdoor games. Kids love spotting moose from the windows!

Wildlife Safari Drives

Turn your Yellowstone drive into a wildlife safari. Hayden Valley and Lamar Valley are guaranteed bison sightings, with chances of bears, wolves, and elk.

Create a wildlife bingo card before you go. Download the Yellowstone app for wildlife tracking. Dawn and dusk are the best times.

Easy Nature Walks

Several trails are perfect for young hikers: Storm Point Trail (2.3 mi, flat, along the lake), Big Springs (1 mi, see fish in crystal-clear water), and the Mud Volcano area.

Carry bear spray even on short trails. Pack water and snacks. Let kids set the pace.

Swimming & Water Play

The Firehole River swimming area in Yellowstone is geothermally heated — one of the only places you can swim in warm river water in the park.

Open mid-June through September. No lifeguards — parents must supervise. Bring water shoes for rocky bottoms.

Ranger Programs

Free ranger-led programs include guided walks, campfire talks, and educational programs. Topics range from geysers and geology to wildlife and history.

Evening programs at Madison Campground are closest to the cabin. Programs run throughout the summer. No reservations needed.

Mesa Falls Visit

Upper Mesa Falls is an easy, impressive waterfall that wows kids. The short paved trail to the viewpoint is stroller-accessible. The thundering 114-foot falls are dramatic.

Just 20 minutes from the cabin. $5 day-use fee. Small visitor center with exhibits.

Yellowstone Bear World

A drive-through wildlife park where you'll see bears, bison, elk, moose, and more from your car. Kids love the baby animal nursery and the feeding experiences.

Located on US-20 near Rexburg, about 1 hr 15 min south. Open seasonally (May–October). Allow 1-2 hours.

St. Anthony Sand Dunes

Massive white sand dunes that feel like a desert in the mountains! Kids love running, rolling, and sliding down the dunes. Bring sleds or sandboards.

About 1 hour south near St. Anthony, ID. Free access. No shade — bring sunscreen and water.

Rexburg Family Fun

Rexburg (1 hr 15 min south) has a splash pad, parks, the Legacy Flight Museum, bowling, and family restaurants.

Combine with a Walmart or Bear World stop. Rexburg also has a movie theatre and playgrounds.
